Hikvision protect students and staff at college in Massachusetts

Massasoit Community College caters for over 7,000 students. The institution is one of the largest community educational establishments within the Massachusetts Public Higher Education system and offers a variety of degree courses in both vocational disciplines and the liberal arts as well as part-time programmes.

Challenge

Local integrator SoundBytes Security were charged with creating a 100-camera surveillance system that would contribute to the safety of students and faculty members across the college’s two sites, the 100-acre Brockton Campus and an 18-acre complex known as Canton in the Blue Hills area south of Boston. The end-user requested the ability to monitor live video as well as inspect footage retrospectively as far back as a calendar month at high frame rates. The storage implications of keeping this amount of data were significant and the nature of the site also necessitated use of Power over Ethernet (POE).

Solution

SoundBytes chose two dome camera models from the Hikvision range together with the company’s DVRs which the integrator has custom-assembled. At interior locations the college is benefiting from Hikvision’s mini PTZ speed dome cameras which have been installed at facilities including laboratories, computer centres, theatres, media studies studios and major hubs such as the library, refectory and gymnasium.

The mini speed dome features a ¼ inch Sony CCD and is valued by security staff at the college for its 3.8-38mm, 10x zoom ratio as well as 200 pre-set positions, tour mode and ability to set privacy zones.
SoundBytes are using a fibre optic network and are recording the data to servers by Sun Oracle. Ed Morando Snr of SoundBytes said: “The RAID demands for this number of cameras functioning at 30 frames per second are significant and we are benefiting from Hikvision’s H.264 dual stream real-time compression. Footage is monitored both within the college and at a local police department, with officers having had input on the programming of the high-activity cameras that they often wish to scrutinise in detail.”

“Mr Morando continued: “The conduct of Massasoit students is exemplary though in the unlikely event of any inappropriate behaviour the problem could also be monitored on the camera system. But the surveillance is designed to protect students and faculty members from the threat of intruders and possible assault as a result of trespass. The camera system covers all public spaces such as entrances, exits, hallways and foyers. The larger outdoor domes from Hikvision [model DS-2DF1-617X] have a zoom ratio of x36. They are effective in helping to protect users of the many parking lots where low-light capability (0.01 lux at F1.4) is one of many valuable attributes.”

College administrators and police can not only observe live footage but may review it retrospectively to assess specific incidents going back 30 days. SoundBytes, who are based in Middlesex County, have laid Cat6 cable across the two sites and benefited from the ability of the Hikvision cameras to function as part of a Power Over Ethernet (PoE) installation though the remote location of a few outside cameras meant hard-wired power was necessary. The external dome cameras are fitted with heaters that allow the units to operate within the widely fluctuating temperatures encountered on this part of the eastern seaboard.

Hikvision is known for the compatibility of its cameras with third-party video management products but at this application SoundBytes have used Hikvision’s own PC client and NVR software products. These allow remote recording and configuration as well as recording triggered by an alarm or motion detection. Clients appreciate the functionality of the NVR’s video on demand (VOD) server and the ease with which off-site searching can be performed.

Massasoit Community College is strong in nursing and allied health including dental technology. The courses in media studies have a state-wide reputation and the college excels in physical education, with recent alumni including Major League baseball player Jim Mann, a pitcher who appeared for the New York Mets and the Houston Astros. Faculty numbers currently approach 500 and their pupils range from teenagers to seniors attending life enrichment classes. Over 4,600 people enrol annually in non-credit community education or workforce development courses.

The Canton campus is home to the Milton Art Museum whose permanent collection covers traditional disciplines as well as the development of photography. Highlights include work by the painter, sculptor and war correspondent Frederick Remington.

I have worked on campaigns for both Republicans and Democrats, white and black. I served the country that I love in Vietnam, as my son did in the Middle East. I was awarded two bronze stars. I have been involved in politics since the age of 6 when my father was the campaign manager for a truly great American Congressman, Charles Raper Jonas, who worked fir his constituents and his country, and was to be admired, unlike you.

You obviously haven’t read the Constitution recently, if ever, the Federalist Papers, or even David McCullough’s book on John Adams. You ought to take the time while riding around in your government provided luxury executive jet to do just that. You represent Socialistic and even Marxist principals that our founding fathers tried to avoid when setting out the capitalistic republican form of government represented by the Constitution.

I find it interesting that you and your husband are multi-millionaires with much of your fortune being made as a result of your “public service”. You have controlled legislation that has enhanced your husband’s investments both on and off shore. At the same time you redistributed the wealth of others. Our system of a free market economy is being destroyed by the likes of you, Harry Reid, and now our president. You ride around in a gulf-stream airplane at the taxpayer’s expense while criticizing the presidents of companies who produced something for the economy. You add nothing to the economy of the United States; you only subtract there-from.

I would like to suggest that you return to the city of fruitcakes and nuts and eat your husband’s canned tuna and pineapple produced by illegal immigrants and by workers who have been excluded from the protection that 90% of the legal workers in the United States have.

I await your defeat in the next election with glee.

Don’t ever use the term “un-American” again for protesters who love this country and are exercising their rights upon which this country was founded. By the way, while I served in the Army, I was spit on by the same type of lunatics who support you and who you probably supported in the 60’s and 70’s. You are an embarrassment to all of us who served so that you would have the protected right of free speech to call is un-American. August has been a busy month for software development. The MATV message portal now has a working option for corporate clients to create and store standard messages in their online account. In addition, MATV will provide a library of generic templates that can be customized for each user. Templates will include statements, invoices, internal memos, bill of ladings just to name a few. Consumers will be able to choose congratulatory, sympathy, and special occasion message templates that can be modified and processed for transmission and delivery for next day and same day mail.

MATV has made significant progress in its business email system. MATV email eliminates spam, provides multiple levels of security options not available with any other email service. Read once options, encrypted messages, auto destruct text, DOD deletion., are a few of the features available on this closed loop system.
The application was specifically designed to enhance productivity for business and include higher levels of security for sensitive information. MATV agents and distributors will be the first to use the new program during its testing and debugging period.

MATV affiliate, High Energy Productions, is waiting for an official notification awarding a security contract for a Massachusetts Community College. Design and engineering of a state of the art digital security system by Edward P. Morando, VP of High Energy, will provide police with surveillance for two different campus facilities. Work is expected to commence in September, 2009.

Learn to be like Google with these three rules

Megan Smith is Google's director of new business and strategy. And Google knows a thing or two about both.

Since your business - especially if it's connected to broadcasting - is unlikely to have anyone with such a title on board, let alone unlikely to fancy that it needs one, you might be curious about what Megan's three rules are, and why Google believes in them so utterly.

As told by Alan Webber in his new book Rules of Thumb: 52 Truths for Winning at Business Without Losing Your Self , here are Megan's rules:

1. The consumer participates
2. The consumer drives
3. Open systems beat closed systems

Let's take each in turn...

1. The consumer participates

The line between producer and consumer is getting fuzzy.

What is a "program director" in an era when listeners are programming their own iPods and Pandora stations, an era when some of us are creating radio programs for the rest of us?

What is an "air talent" when listeners are podcasting their own content or, say, contributing parody songs to enhance your morning show?

What is a "news station" when the most current headlines come from Twitter, and a revolution is powered by YouTube?

We can blather on all we want with the comforting slogan that "radio is the original social network" but - right or wrong - what does that matter to today's audience? After all, the Model T was the "original automobile."

If you don't open the gates for audience participation on-air and online, then you are hopelessly out of step with the times, and your audience will choose to participate without you and around you.

Shockingly, I can't even find a radio station website with so much as a "tell us what you think" response box on its front page.

If you don't want your listeners to participate and you don't care what they think, there's no better way to tell them so.

2. The consumer drives

The gift of choice is that consumers choose. And the era in which their choices were constrained by the broadcasters on an FM or AM dial are long gone.

Even today, however, I see broadcasters Hell-bent on attracting listeners to their websites and keeping them there, as if their audience didn't have a zillion options to choose from and every inclination to do so, regardless of what you want.

The goal isn't to try to glue listeners to our properties, but to make our properties so attractive that listeners want to go there. The goal isn't to force listeners to our sites but to allow listeners to share our content wherever and with whomever they want - because they want to and because it's worth it to them.

As Webber writes: "Your job is to learn to accept the fact that you're not driving anymore...Your job is to create the most exceptional, enjoyable customer experience you can conceive of. You're just another roadside attraction. That's it."

When the customer is driving its imperative to know what that customer wants and where she wants to go. Woe unto the broadcasters who fail to do their homework in this area. They will be playthings for Arbitron.

3. Open systems beat closed systems

Whether its the fall of the Berlin Wall or the current strife in Iran, nature gravitates towards open systems.

Historically, radio has been a closed system - an exclusive club with a limited supply of federally sanctioned members. But thanks to the Internet, no more.

Even famously closed Apple throws open its doors to podcasters and radio streams and iPhone apps - and the primary sales pitch for the iPhone becomes not the calls you can make with it but the apps you can use on it - Apps which depend on an open system (albeit one with standards and an approval process).

It's still common to find radio groups that perceive all the answers to their digital problems reside within the corporate castle walls. But nature suggests that such fixed, closed systems are extraordinarily vulnerable to environmental change. Meanwhile open systems, writes Webber, "save money, increase speed, invite participation...break down barriers, promote pragmatism, spotlight talent, and reward real performance."

Better to be like Google.

Streaming video and music will generate more than $78 billion in network-derived and content-derived revenue over the next six years in the United States.

According to a recent study by The Insight Research Corp., streaming media includes content that is delivered across the Internet, IPTV network or mobile handset. Streaming media refers to the transmission of digital audio and video files over an IP network or wireless network in real time or on-demand, while prohibiting users from storing the files locally.

The study also estimated the revenue from the various types of content-derived revenues, along with associated advertising revenue. The streaming market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 27 percent over the next five years, driven by on-demand audio, on-demand video and the accompanying advertising revenue.

"Over the past seven years, as we've tracked the developments in streaming it has evolved from an esoteric niche to a mainstream market," said Robert Rosenberg, Insight Research president. "What we predicted way back when is coming to fruition. The advertising revenue that long supported traditional TV is gravitating to this new medium, putting downward pressure on traditional TV distribution schemes.”

Mid-month Updates for June 2009

MATV has decided on using PayPal for integrating its payment interface for new web users. Programming for the billing module will be completed by the end of June. Non corporate web users will be able to pay for their document deliveries by any major credit card.Negotiations are underway for additional exposure of the MATV website with a well known online portal that is currently providing online shopping for more than 2500 vendors and with over 1.5 million visitors daily.

Professional Prospecting Systems located in Los Angeles California is proposing strategies to MATV regarding the first stage of a national E-marketing campaign targeted at corporate users of same and next day mail service.

Network Updates

The nationwide network is developing at a consistent pace and is expected to be close to 100% before the end of this year. The marketing efforts are under way targeting the areas where agents are active an online. First official release of the website should be coming within the next 4 to 6 weeks. The document tracking has been beta tested and in operation for corporate clients since April 1, 2009 and has been working flawlessly. Corporate billing on the new platform officially went into effect May 1st and barring a few minor tweaks is also working to expectations. Corporate clients can join our efforts to go green by opting for online paperless invoicing and account management.

Our software development team is now working on the billing module for the everyday web user and should be completed in the next couple of weeks.

I would like to personally welcome all of the new agents who became part of the MATV team in the month of May.
